Matt Helliker

Matt’s life has been shaped by mountains and coastlines, from the sea cliffs of Great Britain to Scotland's winter mountains, the European Alps to the Greater Ranges of the Himalayas, South America and Alaska.

Matt has become one of the UK’s most talented and accomplished alpinists, climber and IFMGA mountain guides of his generation, with a long list of hard and impressive first and repeat ascents to his credit.

Matt grew up in south west England, discovering his passion for climbing on the region’s rich diversity of granite sea cliffs and limestone outcrops such as Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills of Somerset.

Matt Helliker

Exploring the Lake District, Snowdonia and Scotland with his father opened his eyes to the mountains and all they could offer. Later, good friends shared his enthusiasm and joined him on the way. Run-out traditional protected climbs on rock and tough winter trips in Scotland fueled his interest in mixed climbing. It was on this challenging terrain Matt found his true passion.

Matt’s success demonstrates the benefits of his dedication to intensive training and thorough preparation. His fell running endurance, mountain craft and off-piste skiing, as well as his success at red-pointing F8c, running it out on traditional E8 and on-sighting Scottish winter IX/9 sets him apart - he excels at all climbing’s disciplines: Matt is a top all round mountain athlete.

'We're all seeing the effects of climate change along with a polluted planet. low snow years past, less ice, more rockfall, huge fluctuations in temperatures, storm force winds and oceans riddled with plastic, all of which becomes more obvious the longer we spend and rely on good usable conditions in the mountains on our coasts or at sea, I'm no prefect eco warrior by any means, I fly in planes and I drive a diesel van amongst other bad things for the environment but Im trying to change my ways little by little, so if we can all change something no matter how small then maybe that small deference can become a greater one in the whole scheme of things! something is better than nothing…Right!!'
